Adrian is Dmitri Benko, a Russian sailor who swims to shore after defecting from his ship, in the hope that he can find his fiancé before she marries another man. Vincent finds him half-drowned, and takes him to the caverns to heal.

Dimitri's anxious to go to her and as soon as Father feels his injuries have healed, Vincent guides him through the tunnels to the Upper World. Unfortunately, Dmitri collapses and Father finds indications that he's suffering from the plague. Many of the children are lost to it and unfortunately, so is Dmitri. The end scene is their Winter Solstice-Remembrance Service and it's beautiful.
