Cole overhears Vic telling Mel that he still has no information on the disappearance of a man she loved very much. Wanting to help her, Cole transforms himself to look just like him. Cole offers to look for Rod so that Mel can at least know what's happened to him. She takes him the the park where she last saw Rod and Cole brings a railing back to the Watchfire so that he can check the fingerprints.

Rod disappeared the same night that his partner in the restaurant business died. Nestove, who has been "convinced" to help, says that the word is that Marcus Silvestre, a man with many connections the organized crime, is responsible for the murders.

"Rod" needs to know more and goes over to the restaurant "he" used to own. The restaurant has been taken over by Silvestre's people who notify the mobster. They attempt to kidnap him, but Cole is able to escape with the help of the FBI agents who are keeping the restaurant under surveillance.

Mel agrees to let him continue searching and he follows the trail to a small town south of Chicago to find that Rod, now Ross, has married and has a baby girl. The look on Rod/Cole's face, touching the baby's head, is beautifully done. You know this is how he acted with his own child.

The bad guys follow Rod/Cole and realizing the danger he's caused the real Ross, he phones Ross and Laura, telling them to get out with the baby and he and Mel take their places. Mel finds the VHS tape of their wedding and the birth announcement. The baby's name is Melanie, Mel for short. Knowing that he hasn't forgotten her makes it easier, somehow for her to let him go. Silvestre and his men tie Mel up and haul Cole off to the lake to kill him.

Cole goes into hyperspeed to dodge the bullet and takes Silvestre's ring which will give the cops evidence to use to convict him.

Back at the Watchfire, Mel finds the photo Cole needs to return to his usual form and all is well.
