Wraiths of Roanoke
In 1587 a group of colonists arrived in the New World. They hoped to create plantations and become wealthy in this beautiful and fertile land. But things didn't work out quite that way. They arrived too late in the planting season and the Governor, John White, needed to return to England to obtain additional supplies. Leaving his son-in-law, Annanias Dare and his daughter, Eleanor and their newborn daughter Virginia with the other colonists, he returned to England. White ran into problems including the attack of the Spanish Armada. By the time he returned, three years later, the colonists had vanished and only the word, "Croatan" carved into a tree nearby showed that they'd ever been there. Of course, by now, you realize that I like a good horror flick. AP stars as Annanias Dare, and as the pic opens, he's a bit henpecked, understandable when you realize that his wife is the daughter if the colony's governor and she's not used to the difficult life first on the ship and then in this very primitive colony. His father in law leaves him in charge while he returns to the Mother Country. The group of soldiers left to hold the fort has disappeared and the only body found has hung himself in terror at something that killed so many of the others. Annanias has been on ships that traveled to the North, Viking country, and speaks enough of the Old Norse to decipher the message, written in blood, on the wall of the fort. Gradually, he takes charge of their defense and when he realizes that the Wraiths are eagerly awaiting the birth of his child, an innocent soul, he devises a plan to save the child and, if possible, the rest of the colony. Nobody does "hero" any better than AP and he's good here. The SciFi channel has it on the schedule, if you missed it the first time, for January 08. 10/08 The film is now out on DVD |
