Fan Fiction

What is "Fan Fiction"?

  • Tales told to keep away the darkness.

  • Stories unsuitable to the corporate mind of commercial TV.

  • Tall tales they didn't have the time/money/inclination to tell us.

Fan Fic started with Fanzines, stories told to continue the adventures of favorite characters from Science Fiction stories and films.  The first ones I ever saw were mimeographed.  Quality varied from very professional to one step up from waste paper, but all of them shared one thing.  There was a love of the characters from Books, Film, Radio and TV in all of them.

We want to take them out to play, to see how they'll react to other situations and people.  We do things to them we would never do to "real people" and revel in it. Thanks to the Internet fan fiction no longer takes months to get from originator to reader.  No more corflu, no fighting with stencils, you can make a fool of yourself overnight.

There are some characters that reach us and won't let us go.  Kirk, Spock and McCoy. Duncan MacLeod, Joe Dawson and Methos. What did they do before we met them?  What happened after the series/episode ended?  We speculate on their drinking habits, their love lives and create new people and places for their adventures.  Fan fiction nourishes our imaginations and fuels our fantasies.

Bill ShatnerThe first  time I got involved with this odd phenomenon, it was the original Star Trek.

Star Trek-TOS, hit all my buttons. Heroes always touch me and Kirk was special. William Ware Theiss who added so much to the show with his amazing outfits has his own page..

Then, in 1992, a local TV station started carrying a new series.  It had swords, 'a kind of magic' and a star who looked terribly familiar.  I wandered into the "Highlander" world and was immediately taken willing prisoner.

The writing on the show, particularly after Mr. Abramowitz came on board, impressed me. I watched, enjoying the grace and deadly beauty of the sword fights and the slow, gradual development of the main character.  DM-Finale IHe was not cardboard.  He had a vulnerability that made him human in spite of his immortality.  He had friends, enemies and a history.

The flashbacks were lush, the costumes elegant, and the star...  I was never attracted to "Tall Dark and Handsome" before, but this one... Oh, my.

Second season Joe Dawson, (Jim Byrnes) appeared and I had two fascinating men to watch.  In the third season The Powers That Be, added still one more man to the mix.  Duncan (Adrian Paul) was tall, dark and beautiful.  Joe, a silvering bear of a man and Methos, (Peter Wingfield) well, the man had to be one of the elvenkind.  MethosAll this and swords too?  I was in heaven.

Then came "Archangel".  The devastating death of the young student/friend hit me harder than the death of any earlier TV character.  It did something I'd sworn would never happen.  It forced me back into the waiting arms of Fan Fiction. I couldn't leave well enough alone.  Over the past few years I've written novellas, short stories and created Cyberart based on the characters.

Two stories, "Demons in the Darkness" and "In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" are archived at the Highlander Quill Club Library along with Part One of "Illusions and Memories". The link above will take you to the main entrance.

I'm listed there as Merrie. All of the Maggie Stories are rated NC-17 for sex (m/m, m/f) and violence.

This site is a wonderful collection of Eng's art work and stories of all kinds from dozens of authors.

The Lyric Wheel Challenges...

Amand-r, a talented fictioneer in her own right, got together with a couple of friends and decided to create a challenge by exchanging a lyric, poem or other source and writing a four to eight page story using a line or more from the source.

It escalated as these things so often do. Here are some of my entries. Lots more entries can be found here:

The Fifteen Minute Challenges

Members of a small writer's group were bemoaning the fact that we weren't writing as much and the comment was made that perhaps we needed to just write something fast, let it flow, as it were. So, several ideas were thrown out and the race was on.

Carmel, President of Highlander World Wide, offered to give us webspace and we've been having a lot of fun with it. Use the link above to read the other contributions. Good stories by an assortment of authors.
