The Watcher's Lyric Wheel
Jillian's Tale
I was always intrigued by the machinations Joe Dawson would need to go through to keep MacLeod's travels covered. The episode, "Methos" has him still in the States and passing info to Mac.
In "Not To Be, " AU Methos has been dating a young Watcher named Jillian It seemed that Joe might ask her to keep an eye on Mac until he could get to Paris himself. So...
It's 2:30 in the morning and I should have sent my report off hours ago.Dawson trusted me to keep an eye on his Immortal, just for a day or two, he said. He said he'd be here as soon as possible. All I needed to do was keep quiet about it and note challenges, anything like that, for him.
I owe Joe Dawson. He has a few proteges from his teaching days and I'm lucky enough to be one of them. At least, I thought I was lucky.
He Watches Duncan MacLeod. MacLeod is gorgeous, the kind of man you could dream about, if you could feel safe dreaming about any of them. He's a killer. All of them are killers.
A lot of us talk about what it would be like to make love with him. He's had mortal lovers. Tessa Noel was with him for a dozen years or more. Then she died.
I think it was Mr. Horton's fault, but nobody talks about him anymore. Really, mortals are much safer to fantasize about. I had to get some material from the archives one afternoon and this nice, kind of shy, guy in the research department was kind enough to help
His name's Adam and he's been with the Watchers longer than I have. He's really nice... At least that's what I thought. We'd been out for coffee or drinks after work, nothing really serious, but moving that way...
What should I do? God, I never saw them fight before. MacLeod knows about us. I didn't believe it but he was in our bookstore, "Shakespeare and Company". Then, he came out the door like something was chasing him and I wanted to find out what had him going. I didn't really need a reason to be there, all of us picked up our magazines and stuff and talked to Don and Adam about our work.
Poor Don Saltzer was dead. There was blood all down the front of him; it scared me spitless. I knew MacLeod hadn't done it. I'd been following him all over Paris. It was too late for me to help Mr. Saltzer.
I called in and then hurried out to find MacLeod. He was only a couple of blocks away. I followed him down the street, wondering for a moment why it seemed familiar and then realized that I was near Adam Pierson's place.
I was shocked to see MacLeod going in. He acted like he knew Adam. I didn't see how that was possible. They came out minutes later talking and acting like old friends. I couldn't believe it.
I know Joe talks to MacLeod. He isn't supposed to but everybody knows he's doing it. One of these days he's going to be called to account.
They talked and talked and then there seemed to be some kind of disagreement and I heard Adam say something, it sounded as though he was saying that MacLeod couldn't fight his battles for him. I tried to get closer but then Adam walked away and MacLeod shook his head and started back to the barge.
I watched the barge for a while but everything was quiet. Then he came out again, I followed him back to the bookstore. There were Watchers all over the place. They had taken poor Mr. Slatzer away and one of the supervisors went to get his wife...
I felt terrible about it. MacLeod walked out with some book on philosophy. It's hard to imagine someone who looks like him being interested in that stuff. He started off, looking like he was reading as he walked. It was getting dark so maybe he was looking at the pictures. If there were any pictures, that is.
Well, I was going to call it a night when I saw MacLeod stop under the bridge. He had that funny set to his shoulders that they get when another Immortal is near. I saw the other man coming through the darkness and I saw the glint of a sword. The man was tall and thinner than the Highlander and there was something familiar about the way he moved. His voice sounded like someone I knew and then the street light hit him.
Oh, my God. It's Adam. He's soaking wet and actually trying to kill Duncan MacLeod... Or is he. Damn, MacLeod just knocked the sword out of his hand. Is he going to kill him? I have to get closer. I can hear the tone of voice but not what they're saying. Adam's an Immortal? How can that be? Adam sounds so sad. He must be new to this. He wasn't very good with the sword.
MacLeod has an arm around his shoulder and he's urging Adam over to the barge. I have to phone Joe. He has to know this and he has to tell me what to do. But the line is busy. I don't know how long I've been trying to get through. MacLeod's barge is silent. I don't know what to do. The sun is coming up and I can't stay here. MacLeod mustn't see me. God, he'd kill me. I'm so tired. Home. I'll go home and sleep for a while.
In the dreams I see him come at me with his sword and I can't move, I can't run... I keep screaming at him, "If you were to kill me now, right here I would still look you in the eye and..." and then the scream wakes me and I'm all alone in the cold and the dark.
MacLeod is leaving the barge and I almost miss him. Where is he going? Kalas... Oh, my god. He's the one who killed Don! He draws his sword and he and MacLeod are going at it hot and heavy. They are absolutely terrifying.
Every time the swords connect there are sparks flying and they are grinning at each other. There's no humor in it though. They look like a pair of big, dangerous dogs, each trying to tear the throat out of the other.
It goes on and on and suddenly there are sirens and police cars pulling alongside the dock. MacLeod is gone. I don't see him anywhere. The Police are everywhere. And there's Adam, right in the middle of them. Kalas screams something at the officer and Adam comes up.
Whatever he said, the officers have Kalas in custody and in moments, all of them are gone. I can hear voices, Adam and MacLeod, they must be around the corner from me. "Live, grow stronger, fight another day..."
Then everything is quiet. I watch MacLeod, expecting him to go back to the barge but he's headed over to Adam's place. I wait until he leaves and quietly go in, but there's no one there, no one at all. It's empty of everything. Where did he go? How did he manage to clean the place out so fast?
I can't believe this. I have to call Joe. God... Nobody will believe me if I tell them that Adam's an Immortal. Joe has to tell me what to do. The phone's ringing. Thank God. "Joe... You are never in a million years gonna believe me, but..."

In the Eye
by Suzanne Vega
If you were to kill me now
Right here I would still
Look you in the eye
And I would burn myself
Into your memory
As long as you were still alive
I would not run
I would not turn
I would not hide
I would live inside of you
I'd make you wear me
Like a scar
And I would burn myself
Into your memory
And run through everything you are
I would not run
I would not turn
I would not hide
Look me in the eye
In the eye
