Lorraine Covenant

Lorraine Covenant was formed more than 30 years ago. We're a Feminist but not fanatical, group currently scattered all over the US with alliances to other groups here in the US and Europe.

Our history is much like that of many groups here in the Americas. We began in the early 1970's as a group of friends talking about feminism and the place of religion in our lives. The various Christian churches, conventional and otherwise had all tried to convince us that they were the "one true right and only way". We weren't buying it.

Eventually, we started examining older pathways. We found out that not all religions worshiped a God who 'had no other gods before him'. There were groups, ancient and modern, who saw divinity as female, or as a Goddess and God. Humm. Very interesting. Cretian Priestess

The libraries at USC and UCLA got a workout. (This was well before the Internet.) We got a workout, too. Our minds and hearts were soon caught up in the idea that women were not the cause of all of humanity's problems. The beauty of the ancient prayers; the honor paid to the Goddess under so many names and titles, all convinced us that the old religions had more to offer us than those of the patriarchal era.

We worked out rituals that fit the old festivals. We began celebrating the original holidays. More and more, we felt the link with the women of the ancient world. Then, in October of 1973, we formally created Lorraine Covenant. Our Statement of Intent is the equivalent of a Creed. Our sisters and brothers accept this as a promise made to each other and the Goddess Excerpts from our Book of Shadows are made available for study and teaching purposes.
